below, beneath, under, underneath

這些前置詞均可表示位置“在……下面”之意。

below : 指位置低于某物或在某物下方，但不一定在正下方，所指范圍較寬。

I looked down at the hall below.（我瞧了瞧下面的大廳。）

beneath : 書面用詞，指緊挨……之下，其反義詞是on。

Shall we rest in the shade beneath these trees.（我們在樹下蔭涼處休息一下好嗎？）

under : 普通用詞，與over相對(duì)，指在某物的正下方，含垂直在下的意思。

The village nestles under the hill.（那村莊緊靠在山腳下。）

underneath : 書面口語均用，也常與beneath和under換用，但更含遮蔽的意味。

What have you got underneath your shirt?（你的襯衫里面有什么?）
