【103】The One With The Thumb

1. Phoebe: Um, not so good. He walked me to the subway and said 'We should do this again!'

Phoebe同一個男人出去約會回來告訴大家，那個男人怎么和她說的?！癢e should do this again”，表面上好像是以后我們還應(yīng)該再繼續(xù)約會，其實這是dating language，往往都是反著說的，近年來網(wǎng)路上有很多類似的帖子，大家可以找來看看，很搞笑的。Phoebe說完之后，大家都明白了，只有可愛的Rach傻乎乎的不明所以，還在那里夸好，于是大家只好半是賣弄半是教她的舉了其他一些例子。比如“It's not you'”就是“It is you”，“You're such a nice guy”意思是 “I'm gonna be dating leather-wearing alcoholics and complaining about them to you”等等。戀愛中的人們想必能夠理解這些吧，是不是經(jīng)常聽到女娃娃講“I hate u”？

2．Joey: Yeah. Cushions the blow.

可憐的Rach問是不是只有她是顆嫩草，善解人意的Joey來了這么一句，意思是take it easy.想想看吧，cushion是墊子的意思，用墊子承接打擊，當然是放輕松點的意思咯。這可以作為固定用法記下來。

3．Monica: I mean, why should I let them meet him? I mean, I bring a guy home, and within five minutes they're all over him. I mean, they're like- coyotes, picking off the weak members of the herd.Paula: Listen. As someone who's seen more than her fair share of bad beef, I'll tell you: that is not such a terrible thing. Coyote是一種產(chǎn)于北美大草原的小狼，可以和hyena一起記憶。Pick off the weak members of the herd,摘取、挑選弱處下手的意思。在Paula的回答中，她先擺了一下自己的老資格“As someone who’s seen more than her fair share of bad beef”（意即作為一個見了過多臭牛排的廚師來說，別忘了，她和Monica都是廚師這重身份，這里她用bad beef比喻那些不怎么樣的男人），然后告誡Monica這沒什么大不了的，不是什么糟糕的事情，畢竟他們是你的朋友，在你身后幫你留神著呢。

4．Paula: Well, you do realise the odds of that happening are a little slimmer if they never get to meet the guy..odds這里的意思是可能的機會、幾率，相當于Chance。記住一個詞組odds and ends，是零碎的東西的意思，經(jīng)常能看到報紙或者雜志用這個詞組作為一個欄目名稱。整句話翻譯過來就是：如果他們永遠不能見到那個家伙，你會發(fā)現(xiàn)（他們完全接受他的）機會幾乎沒有。Slim的變形slimmer這里表示非常渺茫的意思。

5．Monica: (to Alan) Thanks. I'll call you tomorrow. (Alan exits, to all) Okay. Okay, let's let the Alan-bashing begin. Who's gonna take the first shot, hmm? 這段話很多人討論過，主要集中在Alan-bashing上，其實之前Monica已經(jīng)是下了很大的決心要帶Alan同大家見面，心里已經(jīng)做好了被挖苦的準備了（之前的wine guy,還有那個說話漏風(fēng)的家伙等等一定讓她被諷刺的很不爽），不過這次大家總算給足了面子，包括為了抽煙而寧愿在走廊淋的渾身濕透的Chandler（dripping wet）,Monica一定覺得怪怪的，所以才會等Alan一走就面向大家：好了，現(xiàn)在開始Alan的批判會吧！（Alan-bashing是個有趣的組合，我們也可以用的，比如看到Antique欺負誰了，也可以來個antique-bashing嘛。“take the first shot”也值得記下，各種場合都可以用，“誰先來？”，呵呵，Antique的筆記那么臭，開批判會啦，who’s gonna take the first shot?

6. Ross: ...So I think Alan will become the yardstick against which all future boyfriends will be measured. “yardstick” 本身是一種丈量工具，即 “碼尺、準繩”，其引申之意也就是 “衡量…的標準或尺度”,后面跟介詞of或against, 比如：Is diploma the only yardstick of knowledge? Ross等幾個拼命吹噓Alan，也不知道是真的喜歡還是投Monica所好，總之Monica樂壞了。

7. Chandler: So I have a flaw! Big deal! Like Joey's constant knuckle-cracking isn't annoying? And Ross, with his over-pronouncing every single word? And Monica, with that snort when she laughs? I mean, what the hell is that thing? ...I accept all those flaws, why can't you accept me for this? Flaw這里是fault、drawback或shortcoming的意思，吹牛的時候你可以說Antique is so perfect,he has no flaw….，big deal單獨用在某句話中多半表示反語或者反問，用的更常見的是no big deal.意思是沒什么大不了的。想想真替chandler鳴冤，中國還有很多男人不抽煙被斥為沒有男人味道呢，呵呵，果然他心里不平衡了，開始數(shù)落起其它幾個老友的flaw來比如Joey沒事就喜歡把指關(guān)節(jié)摁得直響(knuckle-cracking)、 Ross說起話來每個字的發(fā)音都那么鏗鏘有力(with his over-pronouncing every single word)、Monica笑起來會打隔(with that snort when she laughs),呵呵，這招就叫圍魏救趙。果然在他的挑撥離間計下，其他幾個馬上degenerate into bickering,陷入了一場口水戰(zhàn)中去了。

8. Monica: Can you believe it? ...Y'know what? I just don't feel the thing. I mean, they feel the thing, I don't feel the thing. Paula: Honey.. you should always feel the thing. Listen, if that's how you feel about the guy, Monica, dump him! 這里一共出現(xiàn)了四個“feel the thing”，第一個和第三個指的是男女之間那種來電的感覺，第二個是好感的意思，第四個則意味深長，同sex有關(guān)，看看Paula詭異的表情就知道這里指的是男人那話兒，ft,西方人那套真看不慣。

9.Chandler: Hey, y'know, I have had it with you guys and your cancer and your emphysema and your heart disease. The bottom line is, smoking is cool, and you know it. “I have had it”是個常用句式，意思是我已經(jīng)受夠了。這里Chandler絲毫不為Ross和Joey苦口婆心的勸說所動，仍在那里繼續(xù)逍遙似神仙，哪管什么cancer、emphysema（肺氣腫）、heart disease。Bottom line是底線的意思，如果某人惹惱了你，你可以來一句，you have reach my bottom line.

10. Alan: Yeah, I'm sorry too. But, I gotta tell you, I am a little relieved.

Monica滿以為Alan會為他們的分手而非常傷心失望，沒想到Alan居然說他覺得relieved（放了心、緩了口氣），原來Alan內(nèi)心早覺得那五個損友太纏人了，想象他一個人在球場上狂奔的樣子，也真有點同情他。呵呵，追女娃娃真不容易啊，過了女娃娃這關(guān)，肯定還有父母那關(guān)，就算過了父母那關(guān)，居然還有朋友們的那一關(guān)，嗚呼……負重前行吧。
