To show its financial ability in competing with foreign banks, Bank of China was originally designed to be 34 storeys high and would then be the tallest building in Shanghai. Hence, the foundation of piling is extremely stout. The concrete piles at the north and south sides of the building went down as deep as 50 meters and the piles in the middle went down to 30 meters deep.
