Sitting next to the office window on a sunny day can help double an individual’s alertness compared to those stuck in the middle of a room under artificial lights, according to scientists.

Oxford University neuroscientist Russell Foster said studies have linked light to the release of serotonin – known as the happy hormone – which may explain why the majority of people enjoy being out in the sunshine.

Less than five per cent of daylight filters into the average building, and energy-efficient light bulbs are an ‘unmitigated disaster’ due to their lack of intensity. But on a bright day, those next to a window will benefit from the sunlight, while their unfortunate colleagues will be left feeling less energised.

A sunny day is equivalent to 100,000 lux – the measure of brightness - while indoor lighting only provides around 300 lux. Professor Foster said the average person needs exposure to 1,000 lux to enjoy the maximum benefits. He said: ‘Light is not just important to the visual system, it helps regulate the brightness detectors which affect our body clock and many aspects of our health.

‘When you are exposed to 1,000 lux, you are getting enough light for full alertness. But in many ways we are light deprived, with the average office lighting only producing 300 lux, which is less than we need.’

He said: ‘If you do not get any other light during the day, make sure you get out and experience morning light, which help set the body clock. Outside light is bright enough to do the job, even on a dim day.
