August 26, 1975 - Venice finally stops sinking.
The ancient city of Venice was founded more than 1,500 years ago, by refugees fleeing [-----1-----] on the Italian peninsula. Built on 118 small islands, it seemed an unlikely place for a city, yet its waterways [-----2-----]. But Venice became threatened by [-----3-----], some reaching five feet by the early 1960's. Scientists determined that Venice was swiftly sinking, and if serious measures weren't taken, 2/3 of it would be underwater by 1990. After much coming and going by the Italian government about committing funds to [-----4-----], an international plan instituted in Paris started to show positive results in 1975.
