World War I ended in 1918. After four years of fighting, 8,500,000 soldiers died. The fighting in France and Belgium (比利時) stopped at 11:00 a.m. on 11 November 1918—the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Remembrance Day (榮軍紀念日) is held in the U.K. on 11 November. It is to honor those who died for their country in World War I and other wars. At 11:00 a.m. there is a two-minute slience at schools and factories across the country. On the nearest Sunday there are special church services, and the Royal Family and political leaders put poppies (罌粟花) on the Cenotaph (紀念碑) in London.
11 November is also known as Poppy Day. Why a poppy? Because in Flanders, a part of Belgium, the huge guns destroyed everything. The only things that could grow in the sea of mud (泥漿) were poppies. A famous poem called In Flanders Fields (《在佛蘭德斯戰(zhàn)場》) described these blood-red flowers covering the soldiers’graves , and the poppy soon became the symbol of remembrance.
